About speedbraten

a speedrunning client for Cube 2: Sauerbraten

speedbraten is a Sauerbraten client built for speedrunning: flagruns, races and the singleplayer campaigns. It times every run, records it as a replay you can watch and race as a ghost, and can have your runs witnessed so they count on these leaderboards.

Download the latest release for Windows, macOS or Linux. Unpack it into (or next to) a Sauerbraten 2020 install and start speedbraten.

Getting on the leaderboards

  1. Open the speedrun menu, go to the hub tab and enter the hub's address: 141.95.67.191. The hub names the witness, so nothing else needs setting up.
  2. Load a flagrun, race or singleplayer map and play. While you play, your run streams to the witness, which signs it as it arrives.
  3. When the run ends, the witness checks it. A valid run shows up here within seconds; the console tells you the verdict.

Only runs played in one go count: loading a saved state makes a run segmented (it still saves and stays useful for practice, but isn't witnessed). Game speed, pauses and changed physics settings aren't allowed.

Fair timing

speedbraten's game simulation is deterministic: it runs at a fixed rate, and the same inputs give exactly the same run on every computer. Your frame rate, hardware or connection don't change your time, so every time on these leaderboards was set under the same rules.

The three kinds of runs

Replays and ghosts

Every entry has its replay, signed by the witness. Open it in the client's replay browser to watch it, or pick it as your ghost to race against. replayverify <file> checks a replay's signatures and rules.

Playing together

The hub shows who is online. A race, flagrun or campaign map opens your lobby: others can play along with you, see you as a ghost, spectate your run live and chat. Press TAB in a lobby to see everyone's times.

Respect other players

Give records some room. When someone sets a record, let them enjoy it. Don't rush to snipe it by a few hundredths straight away, least of all with a route you just picked up from their replay or by spectating them. Beat it later, with your own ideas.

Be nice in chat. Congratulate good runs, help newer players find their way, and keep lobbies friendly: no insults, no spam.
